A Publication Approver can take down a published article and replace it with a notice. The article page then shows the notice and the reason instead of the paper and its reviews; the title, authors and dates stay, so citations still resolve.
- Retraction notice: the article should no longer be relied on, for example because of misconduct, fabricated data or serious errors.
- Correction notice: the article is withdrawn while an error is corrected.
The authors are told by email, and every takedown is recorded in the journal's audit log with its reason.
